New Feature on CTAS Blog Site

Beginning this month the CTAS blog will incorporate a new feature. We’ve added interactive polls to survey website users and blog subscribers. An interactive poll allows us to quickly and informally get feed back from YOU on what issues and solutions you have implemented at the local program level. We will post a new poll every two weeks on a topic related to solid waste management in Tennessee. For email subscribers, visit our site directly at http://ctasenvblog.tennessee.edu to record your answer. Once the poll closes we’ll post the answer and add a new poll for a two week period.

Look for the poll in the left side of the menu bar along with the ‘big orange’ highlights. And if you have an idea for a topic to post or a poll to conduct let us know.

Whole Foods Market Eliminating Plastic Grocery Bags

Filed under: You Ask? — FarmerJohn @ 1:42 pm

AUSTIN, Texas. (January 22, 2008). The grocery store chain Whole Foods Market announced that it is halting its use of plastic grocery bags at all of its 270 stores in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. The company said the goal is to have all the bags removed from the stores by April 22, 2008.

A.C. Gallo, co-president and COO for Whole Foods Market, said, “More and more cities and countries are beginning to place serious restrictions on single-use plastic shopping bags since they don’t break down in our landfills, can harm nature by clogging waterways and endangering wildlife, and litter our roadsides. Together with our shoppers, our gift to the planet this Earth Day will be reducing our environmental impact as we estimate we will keep 100 million new plastic grocery bags out of our environment between Earth Day and the end of this year alone.”

Whole Foods says it is the first U.S. supermarket to commit to completely eliminating disposable plastic grocery bags.

More information can be found at online at www.wholefoodsmarket.com/byobag.

Will landfill bans of specific wastes, such as yard waste or construction waste, translate into a reduction of Class I disposal tonnages?

The Waste Reduction Goals and Methodology Section posted three areas for follow up discussion, the first of which is related to landfill bans. They ask, do you think Tennessee is ready for additional landfill bans and are alternate waste management systems available to handle these materials in all regions once they are banned?

Blogging

Filed under: You Ask? — MikeM @ 6:24 am

I’m able to post, but only using the wp-login in URL. Also, I get script errors for the http://ctasenvblog.tennessee.edu/ URL and the right side of the page is blank when loaded. The blog text does not show up until below the left side menu. See attached file with screenshot.

But a more serious question. Why can’t I recycle the wood waste from my gazebo?

Followup Post to help insert a URL

I wrote some confusing instructions on how to Post a hyperlink.  I was looking at the ‘code’ tab, not the visual tab.   The visual tab shows the link tool as a chain link icon, not a blue word ‘link’.

To post with a link to a website: Copy the web address from a browser then highlight with your curser the word you want the link to jump from. In this case, I highlighted the word link then typed in the URL in the pop up box. See this graphic.

I moved here from Kentucky and we had curbside recycling. Our community does not provide this. Why?
